Australia: The home of new cool?

Photo I Bite Photography I www.myspace.com/bitephotography

Okay, so you may not automatically associate it with cutting edge
fashion, music, art.....or anything else other than arrogance or
sports that nobody cares about, but in the last two years
things have changed that might make being from Australia
the new being from France.

Ladyhawke, the new coolest woman in rock? I don't know
about that, I'm sure Karen-O would have a word or two to say,
but she's still pretty freakin' awesome. Okay, so she's really a kiwi,
but that's pretty much the same thing, and she lived in Sydney, give
us a break! With her first album she has walked the mainstream
tightrope with amazing balance, settling into regular prime time
Radio 1 play-listing whilst the world wide web was kept entertained
by mountains and mountains of remixes. Some of them actually
good!

Pick of the bunch is by fellow Aussies Cut Copy, and their excellent
remix of her hit single "Paris is Burning".

The second track is a collaboration with Sydney electro duo Pnau
(pronunciation attempts on a postcard please), one half of which
is Nick Littlemore, also of the excellent Empire of The Sun. You
will know them for their hit single "Walking On a Dream", which
was (rightly) all over the airways earlier this year, easily a contender
for single of the year. Their second single "We Are The People" was
much of the same thing, but you can never get too much of a good
thing, right?

Finally, probably best known for their hyper club-bothering electro
bangers as Van She Tech, remixing the likes of New Young Pony
Club, Klaxons and Daft Punk, the band's own material, as simply
Van She, is often overlooked. This is a shame, because it's good. Real
good. Has that same dark, post-Joy Division vibe White Lies are
working, it just works better here.

Oh and as a bonus track, how's this for incestuous. Teenager
(which is former band of Nick Littlemore of Empire of The Sun
and Pnau fame, and Ladyhawke of Ladyhawke fame) remixed
by Van She Tech. Siiiiiick.

Rubber Lover

If you are not familiar with the excellent Marmaduke Duke (is it nice
living under a rock?!),they are one part Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro fame,
and one part JP Reid of Glasgow band Succioperro, who assume the
identities of The Atmosphere and The Dragon and document the life
and times of the mythical character "The Duke".

The entire of the band's excellent new album Duke Pandemonium is
available to preview on their Myspace just now, two weeks before it's
official UK release, and it is well worth a listen. Where the chaotic
spazz-rock of the band's first album, The Magnificent Duke, was
interesting but ultimately very difficult listening, the new album is
instantly listen-able, with hook-laden choruses all over the shop and
dripping in shiny pop production.

Deservedly, the band's new single Rubber Lover (basically 1:54 of pop
gold) has been all over Radio 1, check it out below and then head over
to their myspace to check the album out in full.
